Polar Express Party Volunteers, Gift Exchange and Sing Along

Hi Parents,
We are still in need of about 5 more parents to help run the Polar Express Christmas Party. We need two parents at each station. Here is the sign-up link:HERE

The party will be next Wednesday, Dec.21st from 9:00-11:00. The party may actually only go until 10:30. Each child needs to bring a small, wrapped gift for either a boy or girl ($5.00 limit) for a gift exchange at the end of the party.
The kids will be able to wear their pajamas/bathrobe/slippers that day and also bring a blanket, a pillow, a stuffed animal and treats to eat while we watch The Polar Express Movie in the afternoon.

Sing Along Preview
You should have received a note today inviting you to the Sing Along Preview next Thursday afternoon starting at 2:00 in the Gym. 2nd Grade will be the second group performing that day, so make sure you are there early and not late or you will miss us singing. The kids have been working so hard to learn their songs, so plan on being there to support your child.

There will be no spelling next week, but Take Home Reading Books will still be exchanged out on Tuesday and Thursday.

This week is Parent Teacher Conferences. Please make sure to bring your child with you. This is our chance to celebrate your child and their success so far in 2nd grade. We can also help your child set new goals for the next nine weeks. If you can't remember your conference time, please send me an email and I will send it to you.I can't wait to meet with you and your child! Please be on time since we only get 15 minutes to talk about so much!

Book Orders
I wanted to remind you that the BIG Christmas Book Order is due tomorrow! Remember that you can order books online and our class will receive free books for our class library. If you want to keep the books a secret, please send me an email and I will keep them in my closet to hand them off to you secretly without your child knowing.
Books are such great presents and you can get some really great deals from buying them online or through the book order. If you order them online, please remember to use our class code is HLCVM at https://clubs.scholastic.com/

Monthly Home Reading
It's almost time to send back the November reading calendar. Make sure that your child's name is on the November sheet and filled out with all of the days when your child read. It's so important that your child reads 20 minutes every day.
The December reading calendar will be sent home tomorrow in the homework folder. Thanks so much for your support in helping your child become a better reader!

Reading Calendars and Animal Reports

Hi Parents! I have a few things that you might be interested in.

Reading Calendars
September Reading calendars will be due soon. You can either send them back tomorrow Sept. 30th or on Monday October 3rd. I will be sending home October AND November Reading Calendars tomorrow. Please keep them in a safe place such as the Homework Folders, or wherever you deem to be a safe place.

Since we are going off-track in a few weeks, I'm sending home the reading calendars for both Oct. and Nov. now.We will be off-track from October 20th-November 13th. Make sure that you write down how many minutes read each day that you read.

Math Homework: This homework, (especially if sent home at the end of the week) will be DUE on MONDAYS!!

Animal Reports
We are doing Animal Reports here at school. If you don't see a library book coming home, this is the reason why. Every child checked out a book on an animal that they wanted to do their report on. The children are learning how to do basic research by reading their books and filling out the information for their reports. These will be completed here at school and not at home.

Math 36 Club
So far we have had only two children pass off addition, and one of those students has also passed off their subtraction and their Humdinger. I hope that more of the children will be able to pass off their math facts soon. We have a few parents that have been coming in to test the students here at school, but they need extra practice at home too. Thanks for helping your child succeed at math.

***Congratulations to Lexi Stevenson for passing off all three of her 36 Club facts: addition, subtract and Humdinger and Colin Turnbaugh for passing off his addition.

Every Friday, the whole 2nd grade celebrates the children who pass off Math 36 Club. They receive a certificate and get to put their name on a chart. We want to celebrate every child in the class this year.

Thanks so much for all of the parents who have been coming in to volunteer in class and those trading out Take-Home Reading books. I also wanted to thank those of you that have sent in things for our class store. The children LOVED having store last week and we will have one more before we go off track. They are working hard to earn as many Dragon Bucks as possible. So any donations sent in are truly appreciated!

Math 36 Club
I've been testing the children on their Math 36 Club facts this week during Interventions time. Many of them only made it half way through their facts in the 1:30 that is the time allowed. Please help your child practice these facts every night, even for at least 5-10 minutes. This will truly help them in reaching their goal of passing off the 36 math facts. I will send home the subtraction facts cards once they pass off the addition facts. PLEASE don't throw away the addition cards because you will need them again when your child is ready to practice the "Humdinger" where they try to pass off the addition and subtraction facts in 3:00 minutes. Thanks so much for your help with this!

 i-Ready at Home
Hopefully this picture is familiar to you by now. This is the screen shot you should see when your child logs on to practice their i-Ready lessons. Last Thursday I sent home your child's username and password. Please let me know if you did not receive this and I can get another one sent home. This program in math and reading can do some amazing things for your child if you will  help your child to log on and use it. They will also have a few opportunities to use i-Ready here at school in the computer lab and when the Airbooks are available.

If you have any more questions about anything here at school, please email me at sheila.staley@jordandistrict.org

i-Ready, Papa Murphy's and Fall Festival

This week we will be finishing up our diagnostic testing for i-Ready. We have used the school set of Airbooks and the children have enjoyed using them. More than half of the class finished the reading test this morning and they will be taking the math test tomorrow. Near the end of the week I will be sending home your child's username and password so the i-Ready homework can start. These activities will be wonderful for each child as they will be specifically suited to your child's academic needs.

Today the school sent home the information about the school-wide fundraiser that our local Papa Murphy's has agreed to do with our school. Here is the information that was sent out last week in a school-wide email.

"Papa Murphy’s Pizza has agreed to help raise funds for Eastlake Elementary PTA!   The class that raises the most money will get a pizza party!  For the entire week of September 3rd - 10th, Papa Murphy’s will make a 15% donation to the school for all orders placed during the week.   Please include student’s grade and teacher’s name on the coupon. Students need to take the flyer home to their families, keep one coupon from the flyer for their family and give the others to their friends, neighbors and other family members.  COUPONS CAN ONLY BE USED at South Jordan and Herriman location"

This is an easy way for you to help raise money for our school. It's money from fundraisers that have helped the school be able to purchase extra computers so more students can have computers to use more than once every two weeks at the Computer Lab. Thanks for your help with this.

Fall Festival is coming soon. Please make sure that you have purchased your tickets early for September 22nd. If you buy your wristbands early you will save some money than if you  buy them the day of the event.

September Book Report
I've had a few parents ask me some questions about the book reports and here are the answers.
-They can be turned in ANY time during the month.
-Your child can read any book from home, school or the library. It would be preferable to have the book be on your child's reading level.
-Each book report is worth 10 points toward your child's reading grade.

If you have any more questions please email me at sheila.staley@jordandistrict.org

One last thing...it would be great if you'd follow our blog. Thanks for all of your support and the supplies that have still been coming in and things for the school store.

Welcome to the Staley Review

Welcome to the blog for my class. I hope that all of you will become followers of the blog. I hope to keep up with the blog, even though I post at two other blogs with my hobby of reviewing books online.

Some things to think about that are upcoming soon:

Fall Festival:

Thursday, September 22, 4:30pm – 7:30pm
Please buy your tickets and plan on coming to Eastlake's Fall festival. This is such a fun event every year and we raise money for our school. I will be there helping out around 4:30 right at the beginning. A white envelope was sent home that you can buy your tickets early and save a few dollars. Come for the fun games and food!

i-Ready:
We have started the diagnostic tests with the children. It will be a few weeks until everyone is done with the tests. If your child finishes with their tests early, I will send the information home so each child can get started on doing the i-Ready activities at home.

I wanted to thank all of you for the school supplies sent and the wonderful volunteers that have been coming in this week. It makes our day even better to have parents in our classroom.

Thanks again for contributing to the great start of this new school year!
